Peggy M. Gaston peacefully went to be with the Lord on Nov. 27, 2009 after a courageous battle following heart surgery. She was born March 8, 1933 in Cornelia, Ga., the eighth of eleven children born to Robert and Effie Burrell. Following her education, she went to the "Big City" of Atlanta where she was the Executive Assistant to the President of Stafford Publishing Company. She then met and married the father of her six children James M. Gaston. Peggy came to the Daytona area in 1965 to raise her six children and assisted in the family business at Central Florida Mortuary. In 1981, Peggy became a single parent to her youngest three children and embarked on a new career as the Administrative Assistant to the Detective Bureau at Ormond Beach Police Department and retired in 1996. She was a confirmed member of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church since 1967. Peggy was predeceased by her son, John Gaston, grandson, Joey Clark, brothers; G.B., Hoyt, Dewey and Baby Wayne Burrell, sisters; Carria and Kathleen. Left to cherish her warm smile and loving soul, are her five children; Debbie Adams, Angela Smigiel, Teresa Clark (Joe), Glen Gaston, Scott Gaston (Melissa). Eleven grandchildren; Peggy Dunham, Amanda Martin, John Gaston III, Michelle Adams, R.J. Clark, Alton, Mary, Scotty, Brittany, Adam & Avery Gaston. One great grandchild, Jessie Martin. Three sisters; Irene Rousey (Julius), Eloise Smith (Ralph), Melinda Lassiter (Nolan). One brother, Roscoe Burrell (Mary Helen) and numerous nieces and nephews. Peggy loved her church family at St. Mary’s and was blessed by those who guided her through the recent loss of her son and the vigilant prayers bestowed during her illness. A very special acknowledgment to her "Boys in the Bureau" whom she loved and cared for as her own. Each of you had a very special place in her heart. Her children will remember her wonderful stories of growing up tending the vegetables with her beloved father, quilting with her mother and after dark giggles with her siblings. Peggy’s grandchildren will forever remember "Grammy’s" babysitting and teaching them Bible stories while feeding them her delicious chocolate candy cookies and banana bread. The painful absence of such a dear lady is only comforted by the knowledge that she is now with the Lord she so loved. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Daytona Beach on Sunday, December 6 at 3:00 pm. A reception will follow in Palmer Hall. Memorial contributions can be made in her memory to St. Mary’s Episcopal Church.

P.S. Glen, I remember your mom always being kind to me when we had our occasional brief conversations. She was witty, too. So, maybe that's where you got your sense of humor!
