A Funeral Mass for Russell Whitwam, 59, South Daytona, who died Thursday, April 27, 2006, was celebrated 9 a.m. Monday, May 1, at the Basilica of St. Paul with Father Bob Webster as celebrant. Russell was born May 3, 1946, in Chicago, Ill., and moved to this area in 1960. He graduated from Mainland High School in 1966 and received his A.S. degree in Mortuary Science from Miami-Dade Community College in 1970. He was a Licensed Funeral Director with Haigh-Black Funeral Home for 35 years and compassionately cared for many families suffering the loss of a loved one. He attended the Basilica of St. Paul. Russell served as past president of the Ormond Beach Kiwanis Club and past treasurer of the Ormond by the Sea Chamber of Commerce. He was a former assistant Scout Master of Troop 436 in Port Orange and received the District Award of Merit in 1983. He enjoyed serving on the Mainland High School Class of 1966 Reunion Committee for many years. He enjoyed history, especially visiting Civil War sites. He also enjoyed computers, reading forensic and mystery novels, listening to spiritual and country music and working jigsaw puzzles. Russ loved watching water fowl and birds of prey from his lakeside lanai. Russ was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by Eileen, his wife of 35 years; his son, Eric; daughter Hilary Akman and her husband Berkan; granddaughter, Jordyn Whitwam; mother, Catherine Whitwam; brother, Jack; mother-in-law, Louise Bagatti; sister-in-law, Jude Bagatti; and cousin, Bonita Kraft.
